Colorfix

January 28th, 2008

I’ve mentioned before that I accidentally dyed my hair black a year ago. Well, not Goth black, but a soft black. Eventually it faded, but it was still a shade darker than my natural dark brown. Since my hair grows fast (especially when I was pregnant) and I get my hair cut every five weeks, most of the black is gone. But I could never get the ends of my hair to fade so I was touching up the gray at my hairline with a darker brown than I wanted so it would match. Argh.

As of today, I hadn’t dyed my hair since the first week of November. So I had a couple inches of my natural color at the root line and a whole lot of gray. Luckily most of my grays are at my temples and you don’t see it when my hair is styled. Yesterday I was cleaning, had my hair pulled back, and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and it looked like I had white highlights. It was like Bride of Frankenstein. Something must be done.

So I decided to buy a box of Colorfix, some medium brown hair dye and fix my hair once and for all. I guess the smart thing (but expensive) would be to have a professional do the color correction. But I’m cheap and stubborn and don’t have a stylist I trust currently. Seriously, what’s the worst that can happen? I tried the Colorfix tonight. First the slight color correction… worked great, but the ends were still a tiny bit too dark. Then I did the full color correction. All my old color is now gone. My hair is a weird brown/orange shade, but after reading all the reviews on folica.com and makeupalley.com I expected it to look weird until I can re-dye. Tomorrow I’ll try a medium brown permanent color and hopefully be back to normal. I purposely went a shade lighter since I think my hair is going to be so porous after all this that it might soak up too much color. I’m afraid if I went to a darker brown I’d just end up with black. Chris is currently asleep. I’ve considered playing a little joke on him and telling him this weird orange brown was the color I was going for. But I’m the worst liar in the world. He’d never buy it.
