Glarkware

January 24th, 2008

I’m not normally into novelty t-shirts (for me at least, Daphne has a few) but the ones from glarkware.com really cracked me up. Of course it’s late and I’m exhausted, and I find a lot of things funny when I’m overly tired.  In particular I like Zartram the Merciless: Founding Father and Bigfoot vs. Abe Lincoln.  And these stop sign stickers.

Listography

January 23rd, 2008

I’ve been trying to get Daphne to take a nap at 12:30 every day. Sometimes she does, sometimes she cries and cries.  Today was a “cry” day so I needed something to distract me after I laid her down.  Craft Magazine blog featured the Listography journal today so I decided to create some lists of my own on their website.  If you have nothing else better to do you can check out my responses here.  I just used some of their ideas for lists, but you can get creative if you wish.

Progress!

January 22nd, 2008

I’m happy with the pattern for the top, now I just need to cut 144 squares of flannel and enough backing squares (oh yeah, and lay out the quilt bottom pattern) sandwich everything together, pin it and I’ll be ready to hit the sewing machine.

And I’ve decided to embroider a patch on one of the back squares with Daphne’s name and the date I give her the quilt (which will probably be on Easter).

My Padawan Learner

Daphne helps with cutting the quilt squares. Ok, not really.

Me & My Girl

January 22nd, 2008

Check out this site: Me and My Girl.  Hopefully this will be me and Daphne in a few years.  I love the tag line, “Teaching tiny hands to craft and create, making memories, sharing time.”  Reminds me of all the time I spent with my mom crafting, cooking, painting and sewing when I was a little girl.

Pattern Review Site

January 22nd, 2008

Since I am on the topic of sewing I thought I’d share this review site I found last week: patternreview.com. I have been thinking about buying a couple Amy Butler bag patterns and it’s nice to be able to look up user reviews, see how others felt about the pattern, how they modified it, etc. After reading the reviews I’m very interested in this Very Easy Vogue wrap dress pattern. It’s supposedly a pretty successful Diane Von Furstenberg knock-off. Of course that will be a while. I’ve made clothing for myself before, mainly skirts and one dress, but my sewing skills are beginner/advance beginner. The first article of clothing I ever made was a pair of Hawaiian print jams (I think that’s what we called them, they were longer shorts) back when I was in 7th grade maybe. I’m not sure how much my mom helped me, probably a lot. It is so much easier to just buy off the rack or buy something already made, but there’s something quite satisfying about taking a piece of fabric and turning it into something beautiful or useful. Makes me happy. So I need to up my sewing skills. And learn how to put in a zipper.

Quilt Project Part I

January 21st, 2008

Remind me never to order fabric from hancocks-paducah.com again.  I had a hard time getting the entire Amy Butler Lotus line from any one seller, so I had to place three different orders for all the fabric I needed for Daphne’s rag quilt.  I’ve had my fabric.com order for days now, whereas my hancocks-paducah order sat in their warehouse for 10 days before shipping.  I should have done more research.  They are a reputable company but known for incredibly slow service.  I was reading a comment on a sewing forum and the poster said she could have walked to Kentucky, cut her own fabric, then walked home and gotten her order faster.  Great.  I guess I’m spoiled.  Most sites I order from process within a day or two.

In the meantime I noticed the stripe fabric I ordered from hancocks was back in stock at fabric.com.  I went ahead and ordered 2 more yards, just in case my other order never came through.  I placed the order on Saturday night, it will be here tomorrow.  Fabric.com rocks.  Anyway, I’m just glad the fabric will be here.  I’m ready to start this project.  Of course now I’ll have enough fabric to make two quilts.  Maybe I’ll have to make one for myself unless any of my friends and family want one or have a baby girl in the next year.

Tomorrow I’ll start cutting the stripe and flannel, I’ll make a small block as a test and then I’ll begin the layout.  I think that will be the hardest part, laying out my design. And finding a spot in the house to lay it out and not have Allie dancing all over it.  I’ll try to document my progress, so stay tuned.

Crazy Hair

January 21st, 2008

This is how Daphne’s hair looked today. As my dad would say, “she needs some Dippity-Do.” It reminds me of the latest Project Runway where the contestants had to create an avant-garde outfit based on the models’ crazy hair styles. She has a punk Alfalfa thing going on and if she’s really going to rock this look should probably be wearing something black and not this sweet little Gymboree sweater outfit.  Why did I not wet her hair down and fix it?  I’m a bad mommy.

Quiet Weekend

January 20th, 2008

It was a quiet and productive weekend here at our house. We cleaned, put up my new curtains in the living room, tried out a new recipe (Giada’s Lentil Soup with Beef), watched the snow come down and quickly melt away, got Allie a new toy for her birthday, took a few good naps (me & Daphne), and watched way too many episodes of Lost Season 3. Daphne decided she enjoyed sitting in her high chair and eating her cereal. Thank goodness because the kid was wearing me out. She was up to eat 3 or 4 times last night and wanted to eat at least every hour or hour and a half all day.

Chris has tomorrow off for the Martin Luther King holiday. The company he works for deals with mainly financial institutions and banks so he gets more holidays off than he has in previous jobs. Yay! Tomorrow we are going to Superior Grill for lunch and then shopping on 280. It’s nice to have Chris come along when I shop because he can wrangle Daphne while I try to pick things out. We had a good weekend, but I’m looking forward to getting out of the house.

Pom Pom Bunny

January 20th, 2008

Jennifer Murphy has some adorable projects available on her website.  Link.  The bunny is just too cute.  I’d love to make a bunch of these for Easter.
