Miss Austen Regrets

February 1st, 2008

As part of the Jane Event, this Sunday PBS is airing a new biopic, Miss Austen Regrets.  The new movie features Olivia Williams as Jane Austen.  Williams is no stranger to Austen movies.  She played  Jane Fairfax in the ‘96 Emma.

Hopefully this will be worth watching.  I’ve been disappointed in the series so far.  Persuasion was horrible.  Mansfield Park wasn’t much better (Although I’m biased, Mansfield Park is my least favorite Austen book.  And why did they cast Billie Piper?  She didn’t suit Fanny at all and I didn’t like her in Dr. Who either).  I did enjoy Northanger Abbey but it was not on par with the best Austen movie adaptations.  Why is each film only 90 min. long????  Why go through the trouble of a new movie if it’s going to be so short.  I can’t imagine how they are going to condense Sense and Sensibility into 90 min.  No wonder they didn’t remake Pride and Prejudice.
