Fancy tie-dye? That’s an oxymoron
I saw this today on fabric.com and I still can’t figure out what anyone would do with it:

Product description: Fancy Novelty Tye-Dye Sequined Knit Fabric in Lime.
Um, what? There are so many things wrong with that I don’t know where to start. First off, the obvious… tie-dye and sequins. There’s a combo you don’t see often. Is this for hippies when they get invited to the Oscars? Just curious. Also, knit? puke color? knit and sequins? fancy? And it’s on sale. Pass.
And speaking of fabric… you know you spend way too much time looking at fabric sites when you can go on Babyhawk.com and name all the designers and fabric line of each print. I was on their site recently and thought to myself, “Oh wow, they now have Sandi Henderson’s Ginger Blossom line available in their mei tais. Oh, and there’s a Robert Kaufman print.” I spend way too much time looking at fabric and projects and not nearly enough time sewing.

Our 5 year old refrigerator pooped out on us Friday. This left us with 3 choices:
- Fix it ourselves. Yeah right. We are not handy people. One of our last home projects (replacing our ceiling fan) ended up with Chris getting shocked by a live wire and thrown into the wall. And we still have the wall imprint of his butt to remember the occasion.
- Find a repairman to come out sometime this week and charge us at least a couple hundred bucks to fix our old fridge. I hate hate hate hate hate dealing with repairmen and contractors. Really. Unless Chris is home to deal with them we always end up getting overcharged. Plus we’d be without a fridge for at least the weekend, and maybe Monday/Tuesday.
- Buy a new one and have it delivered same day.
We went with option #3.
Sometimes homeownership is a pain in the ass. Especially since we can’t do much of the work ourselves. Yet another reason to move home. Then we can just pick up the phone and say, “Dad, can you please come over and help us?”

Ok, her glasses aren’t exactly Wayfarers, but you get the idea.

I’m always late to the party, so to speak, when it comes to internet fad sites. For example, I had never been on dooce.com until a few months ago (And still don’t quite get the hype). When I point out a site or video to Chris his response is always, “Yeah, I saw that years ago. It’s funny.” So anyway, apologies to everyone if you’ve already seen stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com. I saw it today for the first time and thought it was pretty funny. Apparently Chris & I are pretty white because I could identify with quite a few on the list: Arrested Development (um, yeah), San Francisco (LOVE it!), Outdoor Performance Clothes (definitely Chris), Arts Degrees (guilty), Whole Foods (right again), Kitchen Gadgets (I have the Kitchenaid mixer & Le Creuset, as well as things like an electric tortilla press), and many more.
Check it out.

Dear Daphne,
You are 7 months old today! In the past month you’ve mastered sitting up by yourself, had a week long infection with a temp of 103, and have decided sleeping on your tummy is your preferred position. You roll and play with your toys and every once in a while it looks like you are going to crawl. Then you give up. You still love to stand up and have almost mastered hanging on to your activity table. Daddy wants you to start walking. I can wait a few more months because the more mobile you are, the more you’ll get into things and we haven’t baby-proofed yet.
I’m still trying to get you interested in eating solids. You were doing ok until your sickness when you decided after me shoving a syringe of Infant Motrin in your mouth every 6 to 8 hours that you wanted nothing to do with any more plastic in your mouth. That’s understandable. All the lovely organic baby food I bought is still sitting in the pantry. All the “make your own baby food” cookbooks I got went back to the library. The last time I tried to feed you bananas you gave me this look as if to say, “Are you trying to kill me?!” You really hated those bananas.
You are still waking up at least once a night. You start off in your crib and then since Mommy gets lazy at 2 or 3 in the morning I bring you into bed and feed you and let you finish out the night with us. You like to sleep as close to me as humanly possible, which freaks me out because for a long time I was afraid of rolling on or suffocating you. So as you’d roll into me, I’d scoot back and eventually be laying half off the bed.
You like being outside and enjoy our walks around the block. After a few seconds of protest, you settle into the Ergo or Babyhawk and enjoy the stroll. I can’t wait to spend more time with you outside and eventually get you a little baby pool to play in.
I can’t wait to see what this next month brings! I love you baby girl,
Mommy

Since we were busy last Sunday picking up Chris from the airport and running errands, we recreated Easter for Daphne today for photo purposes. As usual we got lots of weird faces, and no smiles. But she’s still pretty cute! At least we think so.

And the grumpy bunny:

That’s ok, Daphne. I give your father the same look when he tries to take a picture of me.

For a few weeks now Chris has been asking for an insulated lunch box for work. Normally this would be a reasonable request, but knowing Chris it would last maybe 2 or 3 days before rotting in the back of the car or trunk with a half eaten lunch still inside. Every week Chris takes Glad containers to work and never brings them home. I’ve thought about printing up stickers for each container.. something like, “Have you seen my owner [insert pic of Chris]? If I’ve been abandoned please call [Chris’ cell].” I guarantee some poor secretary or janitor is throwing out his containers weekly from the communal fridge.
So instead of buying a new (doomed) lunch box I decided to offer Chris one of the many insulated breast milk carrying cases I have and never use. They are all black and could pass for a lunch box in my opinion. So here’s the one I pulled out today:

Here’s how our conversation went:
Jenny: I put the insulated bag on the table.
Chris: It looks like a purse. Or a bible carrying case.
Jenny: What do you mean? Would you like it better if I cut off the top strap?
Chris: No, it looks girly. I’m not using it.
Jenny: Just think of it this way. No one is going to steal your lunch if they think breast milk is inside.
I don’t think this looks like a purse at all. At least not a purse I would ever carry. Men. Argh.

Her favorite new chew toy, courtesy of Daddy’s layover in DFW:

Using her monkey toes to subdue Bevo:

Go Sooner Girl, Go!!! As Mommy says, Teck Fuxas or Feck Tuxas. Because I am an idiot and can’t remember that it’s Tuck Fexas.
Oh, and for my SEC readers out there.. Bevo is the mascot for Texas. In the Big 12 we have mascots that actually make sense (excluding MO)… not a bunch of elephants and tigers. And War Eagle.. that’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. Almost as dumb as Feck Tuxas. And in the Big 12 we don’t have the same mascot for several schools. LSU Tigers, Auburn Tigers. Georgia Bulldogs, Mississippi State Bulldogs. Be original.
Off Topic- but for those of you wondering why Daphne’s hair always wings out at the sides, she twirls it, usually with a hand that’s been in her mouth. It’s her version of a spit curl.
Filed under Daphne | Comment (0)Too Many Decisions
I’ll be the first to admit that before Daphne came along I knew absolutely nothing about babies or child care. I was never baby crazy and even as a kid I don’t think I ever played “mommy” to any of my dolls. In fact I didn’t play with baby dolls (but my brother did, bwahaa!) and instead liked to dress up my Barbies. So I guess some things never change:

Daphne Fashion Show - Fall ‘08 Line. I was cleaning out her closet today and found the pumpkin hat I forgot I had purchased from Janie and Jack. So then we had to try on the Harvest Leaves cardi from Gymboree. I’m having way too much fun dressing her, if you can’t tell.
Anyway, I’ve really been overwhelmed with decisions lately about Daphne’s care. Every time I hear a news story about vaccines & autism I get nervous. Should we selectively vax, or delay vax? It seems to me that it is riskier to not vaccinate. Then I read info from people that have chosen not to vaccinate and I’m not sure what to believe. As it stands we are continuing to vaccinate Daphne. I still want to do more research on delay vaccinating.
What about chemicals leaching from plastic cups, baby bottles and toys? Right now everything Daphne touches goes into her mouth. How much should I worry about phthalates? What about the chemicals in disposable diapers? Then I read stories about environmental toxins in breast milk and just want to throw up my hands! If breast milk isn’t completely safe anymore what can you do?
I admit I have been letting Daphne watch TV. She likes Dora and Oswald (Cute show! The penguin is Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley.) on Noggin. Is this going to hurt her development? What about all the electronic toys she has? Are these too stimulating? Should I put limits on her time with these toys? Am I worrying too much? Yeah, probably. I guess that’s my prerogative as a first time (clueless) Mom. Ok, done venting. I’m better now.

My last post was just a reminder to watch the BSG season 4 premiere next week. As usual Tigh has the best line!!
In preparation for the new season, tonight we started BSG season 3 marathon, part 2. We recorded most of the season as it aired and watched it a few weeks ago, but we missed a couple episodes and wanted to be completely refreshed by next week. With so many story lines and time between seasons it’s nice to rewatch old episodes. Here are a few of my hopes for season 4:
- I want some Adama-Roslin loving. Really. They need to hook up. This may seem odd but remember this is coming from the girl that thinks the original Terminator movie is romantic. You know, the whole Kyle going back in time for Sarah thing. I may watch SciFi but I’m still a girl. I’m all about love and happy endings.
- Baltar, keep your hair short. The “Jesus” look does not work for me.
- I hope there is a satisfying end to the first set of episodes, especially since we’ll have to wait another year for the conclusion. I still can’t believe they are splitting the season in two. Argh.
- Hopefully there won’t be anymore Apollo/Kara relationship drama this season. Apollo needs to be happy with Dualla.
- And finally, I hope Tigh gets lots of screen time. He is too funny!!!
