Fabric BandMarch 16th, 2008 @ 12:34 pm
I’ve mentioned before that I have an abnormally large head for a woman. Really. I do. Especially since I’m only 5′3″. I have a really difficult time finding women’s hats that fit, and even in men’s hats I have to get a large or extra large size. With my recent disaster of a haircut I wanted to get a few thick headbands to wear as it grows out. But since my head is big they are usually too small and pinch and give me headaches. So I decided to make a few fabric bands. Last night I took some of my scrap fabric (FreeSpirit Sis Boom Mod Girls & Girlfriends) and tried out foofanagle’s best band ever tutorial.

Daphne was screaming her head off the entire time I was working on this and I didn’t have any interfacing, which explains why this doesn’t look too great. Anyway… it’s very comfy, especially since I added a few inches to accommodate my ginormous noggin. I will definitely make another and will change the shape just a bit. I think the band should be thinner and less of a dramatic taper. I will also cover the elastic with fabric and topstitch the next one. I was too lazy to change out the blue bobbin thread last night. Oh, and I got this handy tip from someone online… I basted a piece of yarn to one side of the fabric so when I had to turn the tube right side out I just pulled the string. And I pulled it so hard that I yanked the basting stitches out so I didn’t need to seam rip those. Worked like a charm.
At least I’m ready for St. Patrick’s Day.

I actually like the wider, dramatic taper of this band you are wearing. From this picture, it seems to add balance and does not look like your typical headband. Has a little sporty flair. I really like it! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
