Too Many Decisions

March 27th, 2008

I’ll be the first to admit that before Daphne came along I knew absolutely nothing about babies or child care. I was never baby crazy and even as a kid I don’t think I ever played “mommy” to any of my dolls. In fact I didn’t play with baby dolls (but my brother did, bwahaa!) and instead liked to dress up my Barbies. So I guess some things never change:

Daphne Fashion Show - Fall ‘08 Line. I was cleaning out her closet today and found the pumpkin hat I forgot I had purchased from Janie and Jack. So then we had to try on the Harvest Leaves cardi from Gymboree. I’m having way too much fun dressing her, if you can’t tell.

Anyway, I’ve really been overwhelmed with decisions lately about Daphne’s care. Every time I hear a news story about vaccines & autism I get nervous. Should we selectively vax, or delay vax? It seems to me that it is riskier to not vaccinate. Then I read info from people that have chosen not to vaccinate and I’m not sure what to believe. As it stands we are continuing to vaccinate Daphne. I still want to do more research on delay vaccinating.

What about chemicals leaching from plastic cups, baby bottles and toys? Right now everything Daphne touches goes into her mouth. How much should I worry about phthalates? What about the chemicals in disposable diapers? Then I read stories about environmental toxins in breast milk and just want to throw up my hands! If breast milk isn’t completely safe anymore what can you do?

I admit I have been letting Daphne watch TV. She likes Dora and Oswald (Cute show! The penguin is Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley.) on Noggin. Is this going to hurt her development? What about all the electronic toys she has? Are these too stimulating? Should I put limits on her time with these toys? Am I worrying too much? Yeah, probably. I guess that’s my prerogative as a first time (clueless) Mom. Ok, done venting. I’m better now.
