11 Months

July 28th, 2008

It’s hard for me to believe Daphne is already 11 months old. I know I say this every month, but she really has changed SO much in the last 4 weeks. Last month she was just beginning to take her first steps between the coffee table and the couch and of course now she can power walk around the house (she’s not running yet, thank God!). She’s very independent and does not want to hold my hand and pushes my hand away if I try to steady her. It’s like she’s saying, “It’s OK Mom, I got this.” And she is a very active little girl and in constant motion. A day with Daphne consists of chasing her around the house as she walks and gets into everything and if you are lucky she’ll take two naps, play with a couple of toys and watch 5 minutes of TV so you can get some laundry done or dinner started.

She’s not as verbal as I thought she would be at 11 months. My mom and I were both early talkers and I guess I thought Daphne would be too. So far she says mama, dada, yay and that’s about it, but now that she isn’t concentrating so much on walking I’ve noticed she’s talking more. She’ll only say mama when she needs me for something. Sometimes I’ll be in bed, listening to her on the baby monitor, crying out from her crib “mamamama MAMA mamamama MAMA!!!” Then I go and get her and she whimpers “mama” as I pick her up. Melts my heart.

Today I got a glimpse of “little girl Daphne.” She was kicked back in a pink bean bag chair, feet crossed, watching Noggin and drinking water from her sippy cup as I tucked a blanket around her legs. She smiled at me and looked like such a big girl!! Of course, she’s not a big girl… not at all. A few weeks ago my mom and I were looking at shoes for Daphne and struck up a conversation with a woman shopping with her infant daughter. Her daughter was 9 months, 22 pounds and wore a size 5 shoe. No wonder she gave us a weird look when I told my mom that Daphne really wore a size 2 shoe, but I’ve been buying her 3s. But Daph has had a little growth spurt and is definitely taller now. I need to measure her. I think by her 12 month well visit she’ll be a little over 18 pounds (she was not quite 17 at her 9.5 mo appt). And with 2 short parents I don’t expect Daphne to be an Amazon.

Currently I’m trying to figure out what to get her for her birthday. Most of my crafty stuff is in storage so I really can’t make her anything. I’m sure I can find something toy related to buy her, but I’d like to get her something memorable as well. I don’t know. What do you get a 1 year old that has 4 sets of grandparents, 8 aunts and uncles and various extended family members all buying her gifts? I’m stumped. Suggestions welcome.
