Hipster Baby Names

Have you seen the article, 10 Ways to Avoid Hipster Baby Names? Uh, oh. I think I might be guilty of liking most hipster baby names. And #2 on their list- No Gods or Goddesses, I guess that might include Daphne since in Greek mythology she was a nymph who was turned into a laurel tree to escape Apollo. And yeah, I thought of that when I named her, since I always liked Bernini’s Daphne and Apollo sculpture. That and I always thought the author Daphne du Maurier had a very pretty name. Crap. That means I also broke the 4th rule- Avoid the Names of High-Falutin’ Writers.

My current favorite boy’s name, Oscar, also makes the hipster name list. I don’t think Chris likes it, though, and there’s the whole Arrested Development reference (What is it with us and AD names? At least it’s better than Buster.) My current favorite girl name, Wendy, isn’t on the list, but probably could be. I guess it’s continuing the whole “names that peaked in popularity sometime in the 60’s” trend that I started with Daphne.

While I’m on the topic of babies, we found out this week that Chris’s sister is having another little boy. Congrats!!! That means Daphne will have two boy cousins on Chris’s side, and two girl cousins on my side. Can’t wait to meet him next year.

I agree with you, I’m a teen but have always loved names, and I think a lot of the names were pretty cool.

I think my insight may be a little more relevant than those of the “name expert” who made the list, considering I know a lot more about what’s trendy, and what’s tease-worthy
