That’s Incredible

Have you seen the Ross sister’s Solid Potato Salad bit? If not, then you must see it. Stephanie Nielson linked to it and I watched the first minute and thought, ok, that’s kind of retro, kitschy, cute… Then my reaction changed to, “Um, that’s disturbing!” I’m sure to have nightmares about the 2:22 point, hehehe. And the finale? That’s just all kinds of weird, cool, bizarre, unbelievable. Here’s the clip. Enjoy:

I have seen this a few times…it has become something of a minor meme the past year or so. It IS rather freaky, but it’s also very interesting considering a few things: all three girls were in their late teens when this was done. The youngest was 15. Do they look that young to you?

Also, it’s funny to think how entertainment tastes have changed (and not changed) since this was released in 1944. People are fascinated by this, but it was part of a musical compilation/vaudeville revue film the likes of which haven’t been seen…well, since the 40s. On the other hand, they’re doing their thing to the popular music style of the time. Imagine these scenes with 2010-era spandex/nylon costumes, set to the Black-Eyed Peas.

Do we have anything even close to this today? If these girls did this act today, would they be seen anywhere in the 21st Century? Perhaps “America’s Got Talent” but I doubt they’d get past the first round. I don’t know if we celebrate more “unusual” talents today. Who wins AMT? A singer/group and a dancer/group. And that’s it. You’ll see this stuff in the early rounds, the unusual or just plain awful, but the winners are same junk over and over. Yawn…perhaps we only want to find our freakishness online, so we can relax and take comfort in the boring, mainstream, they-all-sound-alike winners of American Idol we get presented on TV. :-)

I figured it had made the rounds, since that video had over a million views. I’m always late to the YouTube fad party. In fact, I just saw Susan Boyle for the first time a few weeks ago. Ha! And I wouldn’t have guessed they were teenagers. I wonder if someone choreographed their routines, or if they made them up themselves.
